What to Know About Children’s Karting

Looking for something new and exciting for your kids? Indoor go-kart racing is a popular activity for children and adults. Whether racing the clock against their friends or challenging themselves to beat their personal records, kids will have a blast going down the track!

As a parent or guardian, you might have questions about taking your kids and their friends go-karting for the first time. We’ll cover everything you need to know for an entertaining and special experience!

Safety Rules and Precautions for Kids Racing Go-Karts

Go-karting is generally safe for kids, but it’s important they follow all rules to minimize certain risks. At Tampa Bay Grand Prix, all racers must attend a safety briefing to understand our guidelines and regulations. Here are some rules you can expect:

  • Those with heart conditions, motion sickness, high blood pressure or back and neck pain should not race.
  • Racers must stay in the go-kart at all times when on the track.
  • Helmets must be worn with the visor down at all times.
  • Those racing are not allowed to bump or crash karts into each other.
  • Racers must not stop on the track.
  • You must respect the flags and barriers on the track.
  • Individuals with long hair must tie it up before racing.

It’s important to note that the nature of go-karting can sometimes involve sudden braking and turning. As an added safety precaution, all of our go-karts are remote-controlled. We can manually slow or stop the electric karts anytime for safety. Our tracks also feature a barrier system to prevent karts from going outside the intended track.

5. What Are the Benefits of Children’s Karting?

Go-karting is an exhilarating social and physical activity for the whole family. Introducing your kids to go-karting can help them develop their concentration, alertness and reaction time, as they must think quickly to navigate their kart to the finish line. They’ll also learn how to steer, accelerate and brake, which are all necessary skills for driving once they get older!

Other benefits of go-karting for kids include:

5 Tips for Children’s Go-Kart Racing

At Tampa Bay Grand Prix, we want all racers to have a good time. If you plan on hosting a birthday party for your child or it’s your family’s first visit to our go-kart center, we’ve got some tips to help create a safe, unforgettable experience for beginner go-karters.

1. Wear Comfortable Clothing

We recommend that all go-karters wear comfortable clothing that’s not too tight or loose. Go-karts are low to the ground, and since you’ll be sitting down for a long period, you’ll want to avoid tight-fitting jeans or overly flowy garments. As a safety precaution, please wear closed-toe shoes to the go-kart center.

2. Position Yourself Correctly

Just as when driving a real car, it’s important to use proper posture when navigating a go-kart. Kids should sit up straight and hold the steering wheel with slightly bent arms. The correct position will help kids have better control and react faster around turns. They should be able to comfortably reach the pedals and steering wheel without having to strain or lean forward, and racers can adjust their seats if needed for maximum comfort.

3. Maintain Track Etiquette

All racers, including children and adults, must abide by staff instructions so everyone can be safe and have fun. Proper track etiquette includes avoiding aggressive behavior, such as intentionally bumping with other karts. When on the track, maintain a safe distance from other racers and avoid overtaking others, as this can result in a collision.

4. Observe Other Racers

If you have never been go-karting before, watching other racers on the track is always a good idea. Observing more experienced racers can help you and your kids learn the track layout, translating into more effective racing once you’re in the kart! Bonus tip: Hugging the inside of the corners on the track is often the fastest and safest route!

5. Start Slow and Build Momentum

Go-karting is a very fast-paced, exciting activity, so kids will likely want to jump in their karts immediately and speed down the track. However, it’s best that beginners start at a comfortable pace instead of pressing the pedal to the floor to go as fast as possible. If you bring your children and their friends to go go-karting, encourage them to start gradually until they’ve improved their braking and steering skills.

Go-karting offers many benefits for kids and adults. Aside from the fun feeling of whizzing around the track and embodying a true racecar driver, kids can also learn valuable driving and sportsmanship skills!
