Go-Kart Safety

Are you excited about the idea of racing family or friends or planning a team-building event featuring go-karts? If so, you may wonder whether go-karts are safe for beginners or people who haven’t tried them before.
With high-performance go-karts reaching speeds of up to 50 mph, safety is what makes go-karting fun for everyone. Let’s go over a few simple tips to help you and your fellow racers stay safe while competing on the track.
Is Go-Karting Safe?
Go-karting can be a safe and enjoyable activity, especially when racing in a controlled environment with proper protections in place. Indoor go-karting facilities like Tampa Bay Grand Prix provide a real racing experience while maintaining high safety standards, regardless of weather conditions. Go-karts and tracks are designed for racers of all skill levels. Our go-karts handle turns with precision and are connected to remote controls so staff can slow or stop any kart when needed.
Every racer must undergo a safety briefing before their race. This includes a full rundown on how to drive the karts, track rules, what each racing flag means and other critical information. You also get safety gear to wear while in the kart.
6 Go-Kart Safety Rules Everyone Should Follow
Safety rules exist to maintain a level playing field and minimize the risk of accidents on the track. We want all participants to have an equal opportunity to enjoy the race rather than worrying about potential hazards.
Here are our top six safety tips to help keep you safe when you are go-karting.
1. Avoid Ramming Into Other Karts
Unlike bumper cars, go-karting is a no-contact sport. Go-karts are high-speed racing vehicles, and collisions can cause injuries. Maintain a safe distance between karts so you have time to react and minimize the risk of accidents. When overtaking another driver, do it safely and respectfully on a straight section of the track.
2. Never Stop on the Track
Stopping on the track puts you and others at risk. A sudden stop disrupts the rhythm of the race and can cause confusion and chaos. Get a feel for the brakes as you start the race, and brake before entering a turn, not in the middle of it. This will help you maintain control and glide through corners without sudden stops or jerky movements. If you must stop, do so safely by pulling off into the pit area.
3. Keep Both Hands on the Wheel
Our go-karts reach high speeds, which may cause some vibrations on the wheel. Keep two hands on the wheel to ensure stability and control of your kart. You may bring driving gloves to help you keep an even better grip while you speed by your competitors.
4. Wear Safety Gear
Go-kart tracks require safety gear for a good reason. Even though go-karts are smaller than cars, accidents can still happen. Helmets minimize the risk of serious injuries, while seat belts or harnesses help keep you secure in the seat.
5. Keep Your Eyes on the Track
Just like driving a real car, it’s critical you keep your eyes in front of your vehicle. However, you should always stay aware of your surroundings. Keeping your eyes on the track will help you anticipate turns and other drivers’ actions. Looking out in front of you will also help you spot opportunities to overtake your competitors!
6. Know the Rules and Flag System
Reckless driving can put everyone at risk. Listen to the safety rules during the briefing session, even if you’re an experienced go-kart racer. Track staff uses different flags to communicate with drivers during a race:
- Green: The race has begun.
- Yellow: There’s a possible obstacle on the track, so slow down.
- Red: Stop immediately — the track is unsafe.
- Blue: Let faster karts pass safely.
- Black: You’re driving too dangerously and need to return to the pit area.
- White: You have one lap remaining.
- Checkered: The race is finished.
Frequently Asked Questions
Here we answer more commonly asked questions about go-kart tips and safety.
1. What Should You Wear When Go-Karting?
Select lightweight and flexible clothing that doesn’t limit your mobility and lets you comfortably sit and stretch. Avoid anything too tight or too loose. Your clothes may come into contact with dirt, so choose an outfit you don’t mind getting a bit dirty.
Closed-toe shoes are a must, preferably with nonslip soles. Sneakers are ideal because they provide better pedal control and help protect your feet from injury. Keep sandals, flip-flops and high-heeled shoes at home.
If you have long hair, you must tie it back and tuck it under your helmet to keep it from flying around and causing vision issues or getting caught in the kart. We recommend a braid, bun or tight ponytail.
2. What Are the Age and Height Requirements for a Go-Kart?
The primary requirements are based on height rather than age. This ensures drivers can comfortably reach the pedals and maintain control of the kart. To drive an adult go-kart, you must be 56 inches or taller. For kids’ go-karts, the minimum height requirement is 48 inches.
