Are Go-Karts Street Legal in Florida?
Florida’s weather allows people to enjoy a variety of outdoor sports and activities all year long. Our state is a well-known location for golfers, and you will often see golf carts driven in communities instead of cars! However, this begs the question for some: Can you drive a go-kart on the road?
Can You Ride a Go-Kart On the Road in Florida?
Go-karts are legal on streets in Florida under certain conditions. They are considered an all-terrain vehicle (ATV). Below, we will explain what an all-terrain vehicle is in the eyes of Florida’s state government and what qualifies it to be able to drive and where.
An all-terrain vehicle, according to Florida, is a motorized vehicle designed to be driven off-highway for recreational purposes. It must be 55 inches wide or less and weigh no more than 1,500 pounds. All-terrain vehicles must also feature three or more nonhighway tires.
According to Florida law, you should only drive your titled go-kart or ATV on unpaved roadways where posted speed limits do not exceed 35 miles per hour. You may also only drive during daylight. Specific counties in Florida can choose to be exempt from this rule or only allow certain roads for ATVs.
If your go-kart’s top speed is 25 miles per hour, it qualifies as a low-speed vehicle (LSV). LSVs can be driven under different conditions than other ATVs but are still limited to streets with a speed limit of 35 miles per hour or less.
Do Go-Karts Have Titles?
A title is a certificate issued to a person that deems them to be the owner of their vehicle. It is possible, and often necessary, for go-karts to have titles.
Do you have an LSV go-kart and plan on getting it registered for public roads? Or, do you love to race your go-kart with friends on private or unpaved roads? Either way, your go-kart will need a title if you want to enjoy it on roads under 35 miles per hour.
Where Can You Drive a Go Kart Legally?
If your go-kart is considered a low-speed vehicle (LSV) or an all-terrain vehicle (ATV), you can get a title for it and legally drive it under certain conditions. Since some counties can except certain conditions for road legal go-karts, check your local ordinances. However, if you prefer to sidestep the restricted road conditions, there are also local go-kart race tracks you can go to, like Tampa Bay Grand Prix!
We have a location in Clearwater, Florida. You can race with friends or co-workers and enjoy memorable friendly competition.
